I'm Linsey Matak, joining you from the University of Iowa in the central United States. You're now joining securing media quality and internal and external migration projects paper session, which will run from 11, 30 to 12 o'clock conference time. Just as a reminder, please keep your microphones muted unless called upon by me. There will be questions and answers at the end of each session. You can register your comments and questions in the chat box while the session is running, and I will select questions as time allows. So I will introduce our speaker, Henoch Girkins, head of the audio and video department at the German Broadcasting Archive. Yeah, thank you very much, Lynsay, for the introduction. Yeah, the title is Secure and Media Quality and Internal and External Immigration Projects. The question I'm going to answer is I'm trying to answer is how can you achieve your digitization goals without sacrificing quality? So my name is getting stronger from the German broadcast archive. And yeah, please let me start with a little information about the German broadcast archive. And wait a minute, I have to adjust something. Yes. So it was founded in 1952 as a German sound archive, and it's the nonprofit foundation supported by its A.D. That's the Association of German Broadcasters. The content of the German Broadcasting Archive is mainly radio and television broadcasts forms. Gunflint did Tudge fans of Funk. That's a former German Democratic Republic and broadcast. I don't think that shocked the German Reich. So we have hung around about 120 20000 video tape cassettes, one hundred eighty thousand thousand phone cans and about 450000 audio recordings and other media. The Association of Public Broadcasters Bjurman, a consensus on many local broadcast stations which operate their own archives for their in-house productions.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://fiatiasa2020.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1193/collection_resources/32122/file/100855#t=1402.76,1559.65"},{"id":"https://fiatiasa2020.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1193/collection_resources/32122/file/100855/transcript/22325/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So you can see here every federal state has its own broadcasting station. And the German Broadcast Archive DRP provides to the content from the German Democratic Republic and the German Reich for all these A.R.T. stations and others, other TV stations or even private people. So our digital digitization strategy, of course, general goal of maybe every archive is to preserve and make the German broadcast of makes and make broadcast history accessible. We also had a special project goal and that was to make all to live all television content and about thousand hours of radio content digital accessible until the end of this year. This project started in 2012. So when I began working at a German broadcast archive and the end of 2015 15, the strategy was to do one by one, one to one digitization with manual manual quality control. That means at best, one hour of work generates one hour of file. The tape machine will be inspected yearly maintenance yearly. And so we generated about 25 to 30 500 Oreo's hours of digitized audio annually. But we are behind our goal. So we had to double the the hours to be digitized. And we are live to about 50, 500 to 55 to 60, 500 yearly and without getting any additional resources. And so we had to increase our efficiency, of course, without sacrificing any quality. So again, why did we have to do it? Because we had this promise running. And of course, we discover that our access to tape machine in good working condition is finite. So, for example, student was was one of the least of the last European companies to manufacture tape recorders. And they stopped produced production in 2002 so that today even the newest tape machines are at least 20 years old.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://fiatiasa2020.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1193/collection_resources/32122/file/100855#t=1560.23,1748.059"},{"id":"https://fiatiasa2020.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1193/collection_resources/32122/file/100855/transcript/22325/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Our machines are more about 30 years old. And the clock, of course, keeps on ticking. So spare and we are parts becoming scarcer. And our service technician beautician's technicians retire and so new ones become more and more difficult to find. Um, yeah. OK, what what were the steps we took to improve our digitization digitization strategy? Um, yeah, we had to increase the efficiency by digitizing several tapes parallel at the time. And to maintain or improve separately the quality, of course, it's very fundamental that the playback machines are in good working condition. So for this goal, we invested system calibration, inspector. This has to us on a reference media with a with with with a reference signal, which is playback on the machine, and then compared to the reference signal stored in the computer. And with this comparison, we can detect several problems of the machine like speed, deviation and flat our harmonic distortions. DC offset Azmath balance, crosstalk frequency response, things like that. The measurement only takes two minutes. So it's perfectly possible, easily possible to do this daily or weekly. You have to be aware, and this is our strategy tool, that if a machine fails suddenly, of course we will have to repeat all digitization since the last successful calibration. But luckily for us, that doesn't happen very often. Most of the time the machines deteriorate very slowly. So you can see the deterioration of the of the machine and the machine can be serviced or replaced just before the playback parameters are leaving the tolerance zone. So this is an example for such a measurement with all with all the parameters which are measured. And you can easily see if everything is OK by a simple traffic light system system. When everything is green, everything is OK.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://fiatiasa2020.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1193/collection_resources/32122/file/100855#t=1748.42,1923.51"},{"id":"https://fiatiasa2020.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1193/collection_resources/32122/file/100855/transcript/22325/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Yellow means you're slowly leaving the tolerance range and that means you are really outside the tolerance range. There are presents for several for for many widely used machines like scooter or telephone. But you can also use a defined tolerance regime for the machines. Here you can see a frequency response on the left and everything on the left side. Everything is perfect. And the tolerance team and on the right and right side frequency response is leaving the tolerance range above four kilohertz. And this is a short example for Paramatta, a country that here, which is clearly outside of its reach. So this is the first step to ensure that machinists' for digitization isn't perfect. Working condition. Let's take the second step, we took it to monitor the output. Of course, this is not done by manually one to one, but by the software and the software is called the audio file inspector, which can detect several errors like digital clicks and digital clips, zero also analog events like clicks of us and can also measure the bandwidth of the signal. But there are still all errors that cannot be detected by the audio file inspector. That is, for example, we have some tape form from certain manufacturers which are very slippery, and even the stolen machines can't playback them properly. So they have the audio signal. We will have heavy wall and flutter. This cannot be detected. And another error is so called print truth. It's an echo effect when the tape isn't reveillon for many years. Maybe most of you know what this effect. And yeah, we also have some tapes which have which are very iffy. And so that will lead to fluctuation and amplitude or frequency response. We cannot detect this automatically by the software.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://fiatiasa2020.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1193/collection_resources/32122/file/100855#t=1924.09,2099.919"},{"id":"https://fiatiasa2020.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1193/collection_resources/32122/file/100855/transcript/22325/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And even if some short parts are missing, for some reason the operator did an error. Here you can see a part of our settings for the audio file inspector. You see that the bandwidth is very limited. So we get only a warning of the yellow warning if the bandwidth is below 4000 hertz. That is because many of our tapes have already a very, quite bad frequency response. And this parameter we only want to detect if the tape had will be smeared or dirty or something like this during the playback of the of the tape. So after this analysis, we have software and automation, workflow, automation software called Dobbyn. The analysis that analysis is done in our case by the external digitization, by the service provider. The service providers are also going to generate generates a file checksum. So besides the audio file, we get an exam every part and those checks on file and then we check all this. We put all this into a dubbin. And after that, we can we can check those results. That was a suspicious fires for all the fires, which may have been an error by a software called result of your event player. So here you can see a typical this is not our workflow flow. It's just an example starts with and with and watch folder where the files go in the second stage. The audio file inspector is done in our case as a service provider, and then the combination of Decider's checking for several errors. And yes, if one of those errors occurs and the file goes into the corresponding error folder and if no error, of course it will be in the folder. In the OK folder, um, we can have several of those processes done, simultaneous similar statements simultaneously or different processes that can also run on different machines.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://fiatiasa2020.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1193/collection_resources/32122/file/100855#t=2099.92,2273.989"},{"id":"https://fiatiasa2020.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1193/collection_resources/32122/file/100855/transcript/22325/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And all these different processes are managed by a software called Shop Manager. Here you can see how many jobs are working at the moment, how many files are awaiting a protest or maybe failed of some Iraqis and things like that. Um, around key. Um, yeah. Then you can check after this, Dobrin, if you're caught up in processing, you can check all the results, all the files. You might have an error. You can view them in the in the software costs result fewer. You can see here the corresponding corresponding errors like this little red sign as digital clips. And when you click on a on a waveform and player opens, they can directly navigate to the causes corresponding errors. So you can very quickly check, for example, a digital click is still OK because maybe not not audible or if generally speaking, if if if it's relevant or not relevant. Yeah, and the last step will be, we added this year is a service and a Web service to just keep the overview. So it's a Web based quality certification service where you can visualize all the data, for example, from calibration and spectra that service provider has. So you can check if the service provider compliance is complying with this agreed service level. So you have an online dashboard like this, which is which can be configured by the user. So, for example, you have the overall results of all the machines and service provider is using in this case. That is that our five stood a eight hundred twenty machines. And you can see he is checking them every week. And yes, every machine was still was in in the Green Zone all the time. Maybe you can look at ATP to two is always slightly below all the other machine.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://fiatiasa2020.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1193/collection_resources/32122/file/100855#t=2273.99,2449.66"},{"id":"https://fiatiasa2020.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1193/collection_resources/32122/file/100855/transcript/22325/annotation/7","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Maybe that will be something we can look into the next time. While this is another view with some table view, which percentage? And just just an overview of how many reports the service provider created and what the average result of this report is. But you can also take a closer look into one machine on all and all of the parameters which are checked for one machine in average or at a certain point measurement point. And so you can always have an overview of what's what's going on with the machine, it's a it's a service provider. So, um. I was a little bit faster than expected, so we have a lot, lot of time for questions and answers, just so I will be very happy to answer any questions. Yes, yes, thank you so much. We do have one question that's come up in the chat, please. If you have have questions, you can type them in there and I will summarize those. So we have one question so far from Gary Edwards. It's a combination question. The first part of it is what is the average processing time based on one hour of content when doing a deep dove via the audio inspector? And I think the second part of the question you you have addressed, but you may want to expand on, can the results be saved as an example file thinking the results orchestrate or move a bad file to a to a failed bid? Yes, I don't know exactly exactly the numbers of the processing time, I think it's clearly below real time. I would say it's maybe 10 minutes or up to a half an hour maximum for one hour or five. And of course, all results are automatic, automatically start as an example of it.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://fiatiasa2020.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1193/collection_resources/32122/file/100855#t=2449.67,2599.969"},{"id":"https://fiatiasa2020.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1193/collection_resources/32122/file/100855/transcript/22325/annotation/8","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So and based on the results of this XML file. The files are moved to different folders. So if the examiners report shows that that amount that the bandwidth is below to 2000, 2000, 2000 hertz and I put up and the rule for this and the Dobbyn will move this file into into a folder bet and pantless, but it's highly user configurable. So the user does set up the rules for when the file is moved into an error folder or not. I I hope that that was the question. I'm not sure.
